About KPR

KPR/Kaimaku Pennant Race is the thater company established in 2006 in Tokyo. 

Their first overseas tour in New York in 2009 successfully obtained good stage reviews and praises from various media, such as The New York Times and Time Out New York. In 2015, on the overseas tour to Tunisia and France, the works were “A contemporary theater work by the awesome actors” (Tuniscope/Tunisia), “This is a real artistic experience” (LaProvence/France), “If you see this shocking work, you cannot return to our earth anymore” (Theatrorama/France). The official invitation by Japan Society (New York, NY) in 2019 concluded their second tour to NY in the span of ten years as a grand success by bringing them about a five-star review on top of five different publications and has been keeping them winning many awards and further invitations.Their unique spatial composition and staging such as a huge toilet with 10,000 toilet paper rolls on the stage surrounding by all standing audiences (in Theater tram in Tokyo) as well as their street performances in the space suites in Shizuoka and overseas has been receiving reviews and gathering attention from the art industry all around the world. Their genre-bending view has been described as "hyper-nonsensical absurdist philosophical comedy" by director and translator Yoji Aoi, who has been participating them as a translator and a dramaturg since 2015.

Director, Playwright, and Organizer/Supervisor of KPR/Kaimaku Pennant Race
After conferring his degree of Bachelor of Arts (Law) at Hosei University, he pursued his career by becoming a civil servant at Meguro City Hall, Tokyo.He established Kaimaku Pennant Race (now known as KPR/Kaimaku Pennant Race) in 2006. Since then, he has been managing the composition, script, and direction of all KPR productions.The official invitation by Japan Society (New York, NY) in 2019 concluded their second tour to NY in the span of ten years as a grand success by bringing him about a five-star review on top of five different publications.

Awards history

2012 Yu Murai won two prizes, Award For Excellency and Audience Award, at Annual Young Directors Contest, held by Japan Directors Association.

2013 Murai received Honorable Award at Toga Theater Competition, given by the Japan Performing Arts Foundation, of which founder and the first chairman of the board was Tadashi Suzuki and the second (and the present) is Oriza Hirata.

2014 Murai received the Setagaya Art Award Hisho (Flight) by Setagaya City (Tokyo) and Setagaya Arts Foundation.

2016 Murai won two prizes, Award For Excellency and Audience Award, at Annual Young Directors Contest, held by Japan Directors Association. Murai received the Director Award, at the 7th Theater Contest, held by Sengawa Theater.
